Tesla Launches First Showroom in Mumbai: What It Means for India’s EV Market

Tesla has officially stepped into the Indian market, opening its first showroom in Mumbai today. This marks a major milestone not just for the company, but for India’s electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem, which has been steadily growing over the last few years.

The Mumbai showroom, located in a high-end commercial district, will showcase Tesla’s popular models like the Model 3 and Model Y. According to early estimates, the base price for the Model 3 is expected to start around ₹55–60 lakh, while the Model Y could go upwards of ₹70 lakh, depending on import duties and configurations. These prices might seem premium, but Tesla is betting on brand value, performance, and India’s rising interest in clean mobility.

Elon Musk has previously spoken about making EVs more accessible in developing countries, and Tesla’s entry into India is seen as a long-term move. While these initial cars are expected to be fully imported, there are ongoing talks about setting up a manufacturing or assembly plant in the country, which could bring prices down in the future.

Industry experts say Tesla’s presence could push other carmakers to accelerate their EV plans, improving choices for consumers. For now, Tesla fans in India are excited to finally see the brand on local roads.

If the response in Mumbai is positive, more showrooms are likely to open in cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.
