This Raksha Bandhan, women in several Indian states will be able to travel for free on government-run buses. The initiative, introduced as a festive gesture, will be available on August 9 across Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.
The scheme is aimed at making it easier for sisters to visit their brothers and celebrate the occasion without worrying about travel expenses. State transport corporations will run free bus services for women for the entire day, covering both short and long-distance routes within the state.
In Uttar Pradesh, the free rides will be available from midnight of August 8 till midnight of August 9 on UPSRTC buses. Rajasthan, which has implemented similar schemes in the past, will also extend free bus travel to women on both state and interstate routes operated by its transport department. Haryana and Madhya Pradesh have confirmed similar arrangements, encouraging more women to use public transport during the festival.
Officials say this move not only supports cultural traditions but also promotes the use of public transport. The initiative is expected to benefit thousands of women, especially those travelling from rural areas to cities for family gatherings.
For many, Raksha Bandhan is a day to renew bonds of care and affection between brothers and sisters. Free bus travel ensures that financial constraints do not become a barrier to joining in the celebrations.
Women planning to travel are advised to carry valid identification and check state transport websites for exact schedules and bus availability.
With this thoughtful gesture, the participating states are making sure the spirit of Raksha Bandhan is celebrated with ease, accessibility, and togetherness.
