Odisha Student’s Tragic Self-Immolation Sparks Concern Over Teacher Misconduct

A shocking and heartbreaking incident has come to light from Odisha, where a college student allegedly set himself on fire following repeated verbal abuse by a teacher. The incident has triggered conversations about mental health, student safety, and the accountability of educators in academic institutions.

The student, a 19-year-old pursuing his graduation in a government college in the Balangir district, reportedly faced ongoing humiliation from one of his lecturers. According to initial reports, the teacher allegedly used harsh and degrading language in front of classmates, which deeply affected the student’s mental state.

Unable to cope with the pressure and repeated trauma, the student allegedly took the drastic step of self-immolation near his residence. Locals and family members rushed to save him and called emergency services. He was immediately admitted to a nearby hospital with severe burn injuries. His condition remains critical as doctors continue their efforts.

Family members claim they had approached the college authorities earlier regarding the teacher’s behavior, but no action was taken. This incident has now sparked student protests and calls for a detailed inquiry. The college administration has promised to look into the allegations seriously.

This tragedy raises serious questions: Are students being heard when they report abuse? Are institutions doing enough to protect their mental well-being?

Authorities must ensure a proper investigation and, if needed, take strict disciplinary action. Meanwhile, it’s a painful reminder of how words—especially from those in power—can leave lasting damage.
