NATO Chief Urges India, Brazil, and China to Reconsider Stance on Russia, Cites Global Responsibility

In a strong statement aimed at India, Brazil, and China, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has called on these countries to re-evaluate their approach to Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. His remarks, made during a recent press briefing, suggest that global powers outside NATO must play a more active role in discouraging continued aggression by the Kremlin.

Stoltenberg said that leaders from these influential nations should “pick up the phone and speak directly to President Putin,” urging him to stop the war. He emphasized that silence or neutrality from major global players could be seen as indirect support for Russia’s military actions. The NATO chief’s comments come as the war in Ukraine continues to drag on with no clear end in sight.

India, Brazil, and China have so far maintained a cautious diplomatic position, choosing not to publicly condemn Russia. India has stressed the need for dialogue and peaceful resolution, while China has called for balance, even presenting a peace plan. Brazil, too, has encouraged negotiations without taking sides.

However, NATO believes that given the scale and impact of the conflict—both humanitarian and economic—global unity is essential. Stoltenberg’s statement reflects frustration over the lack of stronger international pressure from large democracies and economic powers outside NATO.

These comments are likely to spark debate, especially in countries like India that rely on strategic partnerships with both the West and Russia. For now, these nations have not officially responded to the NATO chief’s appeal.
