Indian Diplomat Defends Russian Oil Purchases, Cites National Interest Over Global Pressure

In a recent international forum, India’s top diplomat gave a clear and pointed response when questioned about the country’s continued purchase of oil from Russia amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions. His reply — “What do you want us to do…switch off our economy?” — has sparked global attention and stirred debate on energy security and foreign policy.

The remark came during a panel discussion where India was being pressed on whether it should reduce its reliance on Russian crude. The Indian envoy, without mincing words, highlighted that national interest and energy security are top priorities for a developing economy like India.

He explained that India sources its oil from wherever it gets the best deal, and with millions depending on stable fuel prices for their daily lives, the government cannot afford to act purely based on international pressure or optics.

He also pointed out that while Western nations have imposed sanctions and restrictions, many continue to do business with Russia in other sectors quietly — making the criticism of India seem selectively applied.

India has consistently maintained that it seeks a balanced approach in global diplomacy, advocating for peace but also prioritizing the needs of its population. With global crude oil prices fluctuating and inflationary pressures mounting, affordable energy remains a cornerstone of India’s economic strategy.

This straightforward response has resonated with many within the country, reinforcing the sentiment that India’s foreign policy is becoming increasingly assertive and self-reliant.
