Cambodia Urges Ceasefire After Border Clashes With Thailand

Tensions rose at the Cambodia–Thailand border this week after a deadly exchange of fire between the two nations’ forces left several soldiers injured and at least two reported dead. In response, Cambodia has now called for an immediate ceasefire, urging both sides to step back and avoid further escalation.

The conflict reportedly began near a disputed stretch of land that has seen military activity in the past. According to local reports, what started as a routine patrol turned into a brief but intense gunfight. While each side has accused the other of initiating the incident, the full details of what triggered the exchange are still unclear.

Following the clash, Cambodia’s foreign ministry released a statement asking for calm, and invited Thailand to engage in talks aimed at restoring peace along the border. “We do not want to see this situation get worse,” a Cambodian government spokesperson said. “Dialogue is the only way forward.”

Thailand has yet to issue a formal response to the ceasefire request, though its military has increased patrols along the border. Both countries have shared a long and sometimes uneasy history over territorial disputes, particularly around ancient temple sites and forested border regions.

As of now, talks are expected to be initiated through diplomatic channels, possibly under the oversight of ASEAN or other neutral observers.

While the situation remains tense, many hope that both governments will prioritize peace and avoid repeating past cycles of conflict.
