Thailand Carries Out Airstrikes Near Cambodia Amid Border Tensions

Tensions along the Thailand-Cambodia border flared up again this week, with the Thai military confirming it launched limited airstrikes targeting what it called “military infrastructure” on the Cambodian side. According to Thai army officials, the strikes were in response to what they described as “sustained provocation” by Cambodian forces near the disputed border zone.

The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, with fighter jets deployed in a “precise operation” aimed at neutralizing artillery positions that had allegedly fired across the border into Thai territory. The Thai side claims the strikes were carefully planned to avoid civilian areas and were purely defensive.

Cambodia, however, has not taken this lightly. Its government has condemned the strikes, calling them “an act of aggression” and denying any provocation. Phnom Penh has summoned Thai diplomats for an explanation and has begun consultations with ASEAN partners to address the issue.

Local residents near the affected area in both countries are understandably anxious. Some border villages have been temporarily evacuated, and military patrols have been increased on both sides. Meanwhile, international observers are calling for restraint and urging both nations to return to dialogue.

While skirmishes along the Thailand-Cambodia border are not new, this escalation has drawn more attention due to the involvement of airstrikes—something not seen in recent years. Analysts are concerned that if tensions aren’t defused soon, it could impact regional stability and trade.
