Karnataka Drenched: Red Alerts, Flood Fears & City Chaos as Monsoon Fury Unleashed

Bengaluru, 13 June 2025 – Karnataka is battling the wrath of the southwest monsoon, and it’s no passing drizzle. As rainclouds darken the skies, danger looms large across multiple districts, prompting red, orange, and yellow alerts by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The downpour has disrupted daily life, triggered school closures, and left roads underwater — and it’s far from over.

⚠️ Red Alert Zones: Nature’s Fury Hits Coastal and Malnad Karnataka

The coastal belt and lush green hills of Malnad have turned treacherous. Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Shivamogga, Dakshina Kannada, and Chikkamagaluru are drowning under relentless rain. The IMD has slammed these districts with red alerts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall and a potential rise in water levels in rivers and streams.

Emergency measures are underway:

  • Schools and Anganwadis have been shut as a preventive step.
  • Disaster response teams remain on standby.
  • Local authorities are urging residents to stay indoors, especially in low-lying or landslide-prone areas.

🌊 Dharwad on Edge: Flash Floods Threaten as Rivers Swell

Dharwad district faced a red alert on 12 June, with rivers like Tupparihalla and Bennihalla nearing flood levels. The threat of flash floods has locals on high alert. Authorities have advised those living near riverbanks to evacuate or remain prepared for emergency relocation.

🚧 Bengaluru’s Struggle: When Silicon Valley Meets Stormwater

India’s tech capital wasn’t spared. Heavy rains on 11–12 June brought Bengaluru to a crawl. Iconic junctions such as the Maharani College underpass and Basaveshwara Circle resembled ponds more than roads, thanks to poor drainage and persistent showers.

The IMD has placed the city under a yellow alert, forecasting moderate to heavy showers in the coming days. Commuters are already facing:

  • Massive traffic jams
  • Delays in BMTC bus and Namma Metro services
  • Overflowing drains in several neighborhoods

Officials are urging people to avoid unnecessary travel, especially during peak rainfall hours.

🌧️ The Rain Isn’t Done Yet

According to the IMD’s latest predictions, the monsoon surge will intensify through 14 June, with red alerts likely to persist in vulnerable districts. The western ghats and coastal Karnataka may see torrential rainfall, while central regions brace for continued sogginess.
